final paper (13-15 pages) You will select one psychologist or other writers (psychiatrist or other professions) (MY PERSON IS ERIK ERIKSON), this person will be your person of focus. The writer must be in one of the four intervention streams taught this semester (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, existential-humanistic, or social systems; see relevant chapters in texts for suggestions). They must have contributed to the field sometime between 1930 and 1970 (so they can have at least two ancestors and two successors).

You’ll then search the writings of the person of focus and find two references to persons that influenced the person of focus. These are the “parents.” Then select one of the parents and research the influence on their ideas and identify one of them, a “grandparent.” You’ll also locate two figures later than the person of focus who either cite the person directly or are clearly influenced by the person of focus. These are two “children” of the person of focus. You’ll continue your research and locate an article or a book influenced by or directly citing one of the “children.” This is the “grandchild” of the person of focus. At least one of the additional people (grandparent, two parents, two children, grandchild) must come from or show significant influence from one of the other intervention streams (cross-fertilization). You’ll then weave a coherent narrative across the five generations of psychologists or scholars/practitioners, integrating their research and showing progression and changes in an idea or practice across time.

Now here’s the important part: The dotted line indicates where the system (theoretical orientation) changed. For your person, the dotted line, as is, may not reflect your person of interest. Change the placement of the line to insure that it accurately reflects what you’ve written about in your paper. If you need help doing that, ask a classmate or bring your computer to class and I’ll show you how to do it.
